Beach Fires

New Beach Fire Rules- Effective October 1, 2024

Beach fire permits may only be issued in accordance with Town Code §93.06. Failure to adhere to these rules could result in applicant or any other person in the party receiving a citation, fine and/or forfeiture of your deposit. Beach Patrol will inspect the area following the fire. The registration fee and deposit must be paid as two separate checks. Beach fire permit holder must notify Town Hall of fire cancelation at least 24 hours in advance of fire and before 4:30 on Friday for weekend fires. Fire deposit checks will be destroyed after fire. No rescheduling and no refunds.

FEES & DEPOSITS: Full time Sullivan’s Island resident (with SC driver’s license) fee is $150 with a $250 deposit, non-resident fee is $300 with a $500 deposit. Permit subject to cancelation at any time.

TERMS OF AGREEMENT

  • Beach fires may be held from October 1- April 30 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings only. Only 2 fires will be permitted per evening.
  • Beach fire applications will be accepted beginning on the Monday of each week for that weekend. Permits will be issued on a first come first served basis.
  • Applicant must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Fires can only be held at Station 22, Station 25 or Station 30.
  • Location and date of fire cannot be changed.
  • No treated wood of any kind is permitted for burning. No carbon based starter fluids, no toxic materials, including trash or debris, of any kind will be used for burning.
  • Fire cannot be left unattended.
  • Fire will be limited to 3 feet in diameter and no higher than 3 feet. A hole dug for the fire can only be 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet in size.
  • Fire must not be within 100 feet of the dunes or a turtle nesting area.
  • Applicant is responsible for clean-up.  All fire material and litter must be removed from the beach.
  • Area must be cleaned for 100 feet in all directions.
  • Beach activity is prohibited after 11p.m (SI Code Sec. 93.06).
  • Attendees must park in designated right of way areas and may not block the street or beach path.
  • Attendees must comply with the dog ordinance (SI Code Sec. 90.17).
  • Alcoholic beverages are prohibited on all streets, boardwalks, and beaches (SI Code Sec. 4.24 and 132.04-05). Smoking is prohibited on the beaches and boardwalks (SI Code Sec 130.04).
  • Event must comply with the noise ordinance (SI Code Sec. 132.15).
  • Attendees enter the ocean at their own risk. No lifeguards on duty at any time.
  • Commercial activity is prohibited on beach (SI Code 4-32).
  • No single use plastic, polystyrene or glass containers are allowed on the beach at any time(SI Code Sec. 132.31).
  • No motorized vehicles are allowed on the beach paths or beaches including golf carts, low speed vehicles, mopeds and electric bikes. (SI Code 4.23)

BEACH FIRE PROCEDURES

  • Permit holder must apply in person and present a legal photo ID.
  • Permit holder must have physical permit in hand during the entirety of event.
  • Deposit checks will be destroyed after fire. Permit holders will be contacted if the check must be cashed for any reason.
  • Date and location of fire cannot be changed. Permit holders who cancel a fire, due to rain or any other circumstance, are not refunded the registration fee.
  • For any event with 50 or more you will be required to fill out a Special Event Permit and provide a Certificate of Insurance. 
  • Fires may be canceled by the Fire Station due to dangerous weather conditions. These cancelations must be verified by the Fire Station. The permit holder must call the Fire Station at (843)883-9944 day of fire to confirm conditions are acceptable for a beach bonfire.
  • Permits will not be issued if a burn ban is in effect and cannot be reserved for a later date.
  • If winds are too high to safely have a fire during the permit’s scheduled event, this must be confirmed by the Fire Station.
  • Permit holders of fires canceled by the Fire Station will be able to pick up registration fee and deposit checks within 5 days of fire. Checks not picked up will be destroyed.
