Administrator's Message- May 2026

Greetings Sullivan’s Island Residents,

Summer is right around the corner, and many of the Town’s planning efforts are in full swing. We are excited to announce a range of community events as we prepare to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, beginning with the anniversary of the Battle of Sullivan’s Island on June 28 (Carolina Day), and culminating in a grand fireworks display over Stith Park on July 4.

Central to the Town’s focus on its role in the Revolutionary War will be the construction of a partial replica of the famous palmetto log fort atop Battery Capron, better known as “The Mound.” This exhibit will feature a cross-section representing the size and scale of the original fort constructed at Fort Moultrie. Construction is underway, and we would like to thank all those who have contributed to making this project possible including SC250 Charleston, Friends of Charleston National Parks, Battery Gadsden Cultural Center, and the many residents who advocated for the exhibit during many Town Council planning sessions.

We will also continue hosting additional showings of the Battle of Sullivan’s Island short film, produced and directed by Rob Shenk of Wide-Awake Films (details below in the special events section).

In keeping with the theme, the Sullivan’s Island Club will be sponsoring two free concerts featuring music and storytelling at Sunrise Presbyterian Church on June 20, 2026. Performances will include Carol Mallett Rifkin and Friends Appalachian Trio, Delia Chariker and Keepers of the Word with the Bright Family and Singers, with storytelling woven throughout by Charleston’s own Ann Caldwell.

Outlined below are additional events scheduled for May and June. Please continue checking the Town’s homepage and event calendar, and be sure to register for the Town’s monthly newsletter for the latest updates.

Hurricane Preparedness 2026:

May 1 marks the start of Hurricane Preparedness Week, which is a great time to assess your level of readiness and evaluate your property’s vulnerability to storm surge, heavy rainfall, and high winds. The South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) offers helpful resources on its website to encourage residents to Know Your Zone, Prepare Your Home and Remember Your Route.

Please remember that the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and it is critically important that Island residents and our business partners begin preparing well in advance of any potential storm impacts.

We also encourage you to visit the Town’s Emergency Preparedness page for storm preparation tips, local resources, and important contact information.
