Battery Logan Rehabilitation and Vegetation Management

PROJECT COMPLETED WEEK OF OCTOBER 21ST

PUBLIC WARNING: PLEASE TAKE NOTE BATTERY LOGAN IS NOT ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC DURING THE RENOVATION PROCESS. THE STRUCTURE IS VERY UNSTABLE AND DANGEROUS IN CERTAIN LOCATIONS.

Invasive Removal On Top of Battery Logan

The images below show what an impact the removal of invasives can have for our lowcountry landscape. As the vast majority of the understory was comprised of Elaeagnus, Pittosporum, and Privets, the removal of these ecologically damaging plants will make way for the native understory plants on top of the battery, chiefly Yaupon Holly and Carolina Laurelcherry.

Ecological Pivot

As this project coincides with peak fall migration for songbirds, as well as the arrival of Monarch butterflies to the island, concerns about the ecological impacts of this project were raised, and the Town pivoted its original plans accordingly. Discussion of the concerns and a presentation on the matter can be viewed at this link to the October 22nd Council Meeting (fast forward to 1:55).

For an overview of the changes, see:
Battery Logan - Vegetation Management Plan with Reduced Ecological Impact (pdf)

Background

Battery Logan is a reinforced concrete emplacement originally designed to house breech-loading guns. It was the third of eight artillery batteries constructed on Sullivan's Island in the late 19th century as a part of the Endicott System of coastal fortifications. Over the last few decades, a dense tangle of vegetation has cropped up around and over the historic structure. The Town is pleased to announce that YardWorks has been selected to perform the vegetation management of Battery Logan, following a competitive bidding process in accordance with Section 37.05.

$24,600 Yardworks
$30,805 Yellowstone Commercial Landscape
$82,552 Bartlett Tree Experts
