Greetings Sullivan’s Island Residents,
Message from the Administrator: Hurricane Season Update, July 11, 2024
Now is the time to finalize your hurricane preparation efforts!
The 2024 hurricane season has gotten off to a quick start with one of the most powerful tropical storms ever recorded in the month of July. Hurricane Beryl quickly intensified over the warm waters of the Caribbean and thankfully slowed to a tropical storm before making landfall along the Texas coast. Unfortunately, this is most likely a foreshadowing of things to come for this year’s tropical forecast.
According to NOAA, this season is being touted as one of the busiest on record with up to 25 named storms, 13 hurricanes and 4-7 major hurricanes. The above-normal activity is due to a confluence of factors, including near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean, development of La Niña conditions in the Pacific and reduced Atlantic Tradewinds (NOAA).
As of today, there are no storms forecasted to impact Carolina coast, however, please stay vigilant by taking the following actions:
New Everbridge Mass Communications Platform
Receiving up-to-date communications from Town staff and Charleston County officials is essential before and after emergency weather events. The best way to receive information will be via the Town’s new Mass Communication Platform Everbridge. https://www.everbridge.com/products/nixle/ . Click on the “Resident Sign-Up and Login” to register for Town emergency messages. Other information can be found on the Town’s website, or the via the Town’s X or Twitter feed.
Evacuation Plan
Plan you family’s evacuation plan now! If you are new to Sullivan’s Island, staff members at Town Hall can provide you with plan information and guidance on preparing your property for storm conditions and safe evacuation if necessary. Plan examples can be found on the Town website or on the Charleston County website.
Resident Re-entry Pass
Please remember the Town has introduced vehicle re-entry tags for Island residents and property owners which may be necessary for access during times of a natural disaster or exigent circumstances.
These hanging tags will only be distributed from Town Hall by presenting a current driver’s license with a Sullivan’s Island address, or with a property deed or other proof of property ownership (closing statement, tax bill, tax return, etc.). It is strongly advised to evacuate with these documents should you need to demonstrate re-entry is warranted in the event road blockades are needed.
Only two tags will be issued per household, without exception. Applications for tags may only be received by stopping by Town Hall.
Sincerely,
Joe Henderson
