Hurricane Dorian- Message #11

Thu, 09/05/2019

Good afternoon Island residents,

While we are still under the influence of the demon Hurricane Dorian, the eye is about 50 miles east of Sullivan’s Island and moving away from us.  Nevertheless, dangerous conditions still exist.

Present and anticipated weather conditions

  • Wind on the Island are expected to remain strong through the afternoon up to 65mph from the north/northwest
  • Wind gusts at Shuttes Folly (in the harbor at Castle Pinckney) were recorded at 80 mph
  • The tide surge threat for this afternoon will be far less than anticipated
  • Lower areas and streets on the Island will hold rainwater

Town Status

  • Town Hall will remain at OPCON 1 until further notice
  • MEOC will be manned at 24 hours until further notice
  • Town Hall will open at Noon Friday 9-6-19
  • Windshield survey today found little in the way of structural or infrastructure damage. Approximately one dozen trees have been reported down
  • Town crews are at the ready to begin clearing downed trees and limbs when weather conditions allow
  • Damage assessment teams are anticipated to begin a detailed review of the Island Friday 9-6-19 at 7:00 AM
  • At this time there are no plans to restrict access to the Island
  • At this time there are no plans to enforce a curfew on the Island
  • Sullivan’s Island Police Department will have more than normal staffing patrolling the Island; Sullivan’s Island Fire Department will have two crews at the ready to respond to calls this evening

Recovery Effort

  • There is no timeline for collection of Sullivan’s Island household garbage yet; Charleston County does not anticipate opening the landfill until next week.  It will be necessary to hold your carts until further notice
  • Charleston County will evaluate county-wide debris clean up in order to activate the contractor
  • When cleaning up around your house
  • Segregate piles by organics, metals, construction and hazardous.  Bag all loose organic material materials
  • Do not block any fire hydrant
  • Do not block your water meter, customer shut off valve or man-holes
  • The Island is now experiencing power outages; Dominion Energy has reported 125,000 residents without power in the tri-county area
  • Do not approach a downed power line as it may be energized
  • If you loose power contact Dominion Energy at 1-888-333-4465
  • Dominion is crafting a plan to restore energy to the area; once the weather allow crews will be dispatched – there is no timeline established for Sullivan’s Island as of right now

IF YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY OR SEE SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY DIAL 9-1-1; POLICE AND FIRE WILL RESPOND IMMEDIATELY

Reverting with further information tomorrow.
