Golf Cart & Low Speed Vehicles

Golf Carts

Requirements to Operate a Golf Cart:

  • Must be registered and permitted through the SCDMV.
  • Must have proof of ownership and liability insurance.

Where You Can Drive:

  • Within 4 miles of the registered address or entrance of a gated community (if registered inside it).
  • Only on secondary roads (e.g. Middle Street) with a speed limit of 35 mph or less.
  • Can cross major roads with speed limits over 35 mph only at intersections.
  • Not allowed on:
    • SC-703 (Ben Sawyer Blvd/Causeway & Jasper Blvd),
    • Bridges, including:
      • Breach Inlet into or from Isle of Palms
      • Ben Sawyer Bridge into or from Mount Pleasant

Operator Rules:

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license.
  • Must carry:
    • Driver’s license
    • Registration certificate
    • Proof of insurance

Time Restrictions:

  • Golf carts may be operated only during daylight hours—even if they have lights.

Child Safety:

  • Passengers under 12 years old must wear a fastened safety belt on public roads.

 

Low Speed Vehicles (LSVs)

Requirements:

  • Must be registered with SCDMV and have a license plate.
  • Must comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
  • Required equipment includes:
    • Headlights, turn signals, tail/brake lights, reflectors
    • Mirrors (driver side mandatory; interior or passenger side also required)
    • Windshield
    • Parking brake
    • VIN
    • Seat belts at every seat

Where You Can Drive:

  • Allowed on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less.
  • Can access Jasper Blvd and cross Breach Inlet Bridge.
  • Cannot cross the Ben Sawyer Bridge.

Speed Limit:

  • LSVs cannot exceed 25 mph.

 Handicapped Golf Cart Permits

  • Available to residents and visitors.
  • Must apply at Town Hall with:
    • Driver’s license
    • Handicap placard

Important Reminder for Both Vehicle Types:

  • Operators must follow all traffic laws, including DUI laws (no alcohol or drugs).
