The Charleston Running Club will host the annual Charlie Post Classic 5K and 15K road race again this year on Sullivan’s Island Saturday January 29, 2022. The event has been held annually on the Island since 1988 with cancellations only in 1989 and 2021. Race proceeds support a scholarship fund at the College of Charleston in memory of Dr. Charlie Post.
Both the 5K and 15K race will begin at 8:30AM from the Sullivan’s Island Elementary School. Both courses take runners around the Island on various secondary streets. By and large the 5K race, which begins at SIES, takes runners east on I’On Avenue to Station 31 Street and returns to the school by way of Marshall Boulevard to Station 28 Street to Atlantic Avenue.
Charlie Post 5-K Course Description
The longer 15K race, which begins at the SIES, is a bit more circuitous taking runners the entire length of the Island using secondary streets such as I’On Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, Osceola Avenue, Station 18 Street, Station 16 Street, Central Avenue and Marshall Boulevard.
Charlie Post 15-K Course Description
Between 300 to 500 participants are expected for the race. With a start time at 8:30AM, the event should conclude by 11:00AM. Sullivan’s Island Fire Department, Sullivan’s Island Volunteer Fire and Rescue and Sullivan’s Island Police Department will assist with race operations.
While the event is not expected to create traffic congestion on or off of the Island, residents are asked to drive carefully remaining vigilant for runners. Additionally, please build a few extra minutes into your commute that morning.
Applications are available from the Charleston Running Club www.charlestonrunningclub.com.
