A Message from the Town Administrator- 9/24/2021

Andy Benke

Greetings Island residents,

Hope everyone is enjoying this exceptionally nice fall weather!!

Here are just a few albeit important reminders for everyone as we move into the weekend.

2021 Hurricane Season

September is the most active and dangerous month for hurricanes in the South Atlantic region. In fact, as of this morning there are three active systems with another scheduled to emerge from the Sahara Desert this weekend. Of particular interest for the Sullivan’s Island is Hurricane Sam which is presently located at 11.8N 43.7W or 2326 miles from Station 22 Street. A decrease in forward speed and motion toward the west-northwest are expected over the weekend.  Presently winds remain near 75 mph with higher gusts.  With shear winds remaining very low and warm water in the Atlantic, rapid intensification is forecast to resume over the next several days and Sam is likely to become a major hurricane by Sunday/Monday with wind exceeding 130 mph. A review of the overnight Euro and GFS tracking models seem to indicate this storm will curve north toward Bermuda before reaching the general area of Lesser Antilles thus sparing the East Coast of a direct hit. Having said that, remember there is much distance and time between the Sullivan’s Island and this storm so keep an eye on it for now.

Cooper River Bridge Run – Saturday 9-25-21

The rescheduled Cooper River Bridge Run is tomorrow so plan your travel routes carefully. Also alternate routes will experience heavier than normal traffic volume. While the race begins at 8am, the Mt. Pleasant Police Department advises that certain segments of Coleman Boulevard with be closed as early as 3am for site preparation. The southbound on ramp to the Ravenel Bridge from Coleman Boulevard will close at 6am. The Ravenel Bridge in both directions will close at 7am. The Ravenel Bridge and all roadways will reopen when participants and volunteers are safely out of harms way. The objective is to fully restore traffic by Noon. For more information visit https://bridgerun.com.

Line Flushing Will Result in Lower Household Water Pressure

Charleston Water System will be flushing its new water line from Sullivan’s Island to Mt. Pleasant Wednesday 9-29-21 between 9am and 3pm. Island residents will notice a temporary reduction in the normal water pressure available to households during that period. The lower pressure will not adversely impact water quality, fire suppression or your household appliances.

Fire Station and Equipment Storage Buildings

The work on the Fire Station and Storage Building is progressing with demolition complete with sitework and masonry underway. While safety regulations prohibit site visits by residents, construction plans and specifications are available at Town Hall. If you have an interest someone will gladly give a brief of the project.

Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch

In the event you need assistance from Fire or Police personnel always dial 9-1-1 for emergencies or dial 843-743-7200 for non-emergency assistance.  The staff is standing-by at the ready to assist.

Wishing you all the best for a great weekend.

Andy Benke
