Hurricane Dorian- Message #10

Thu, 09/05/2019

Good morning Island residents,

This is your 12:30 am Thursday Hurricane update from Sullivan’s Island:

  • I just completed a ride around the Island to survey the conditions and the good news is that aside from downed palm fronds and leaves things look pretty good.  It is almost high tide and the water did not breach over the causeway or either end of the Island.  It has been raining solid since about 8:30PM.  The only standing rain water on the road that I saw was in the 32 block of Marshall, 29 block of Marshall and 21 block of Pettigrew.
  • At this early hour recorded sustained wind was 50 mph with gusts up to 62 mph.

Now for the bad news:

  • Dorian has intensified and is now a Cat 3 at 115 mph
  • Track will bring the storm very close to Sullivan’s Island perhaps with the outer eye wall brushing against us
  • Wind speeds are expected to reach 85 mph
  • THE MAJOR CONCERN WILL BE TIDE SURGE NEAR HIGH TIDE THURSDAY AFTERNOON AT 1:54 PM WHEN WINDS COULD PEAK AT 85 MPH
  • Conditions will be extremely dangerous on the Island late Thursday/early Friday
  • Anticipate power loss
  • Count on rising water at time of high tide

What you should do:

  • Shelter in place and DO NOT VENTURE outside; most importantly do not attempt to drive – conditions will be extremely dangerous from sunrise to sunset Thursday
  • Dial 9-1-1 if you need assistance; the Town is fully staffed with emergency first responders for this event
  • Contact Dominion Energy at 1-800-251-7234; DO NOT APPROACH A DOWNED POWER LINE AS IT MAY STILL BE ENERGIZED

What the Town is doing

  • The Fire Department is abundantly staffed to respond to any emergency
  • The Police Department has 6 units patrolling the Island to provide security
  • High water rescue vehicles are at the ready and prepared to respond
  • Several staff members are at Town Hall tracking the storm

Special thanks to Charleston County Council Chairman Elliott Summey for stopping by Town Hall a few hours ago to check on any needs that the Town may have.
