Municipal Elections & Election Commission

The Municipal Election Commission of the Town of Sullivan’s Island will conduct the Town of Sullivan’s Island Municipal Election on Tuesday, May 4, 2021.

The following offices shall be included in this election:

Mayoral seat- 4-year term
Three Council seats – 4-year term

The following candidates will appear on the ballot for the Town of Sullivan's Island General Election held on May 4, 2021:

Persons desiring to vote in the upcoming municipal election must be registered to vote.  The last day to register to vote is April 3, 2021.  Applications by mail to the County Board of Voter Registration office must be postmarked no later than April 3, 2021.  The last day to register at the County Board of Voter Registration office is April 2, 2021.

Absentee ballots may be requested and mailed from the Board of Elections and Voter Registration Office of Charleston County.  Persons wishing to cast their absentee ballot in person at the Board of Elections and Voter Registration Office, 4367 Headquarters Road, North Charleston may do so until 5:00 pm on ­­Monday, May 3, 2021.  At 11 a.m. on Election Day, the Sullivan’s Island Municipal Election Commission will begin the examination of the absentee ballot return envelopes. This process will take place at the Board of Elections and Voter Registration Office, 4367 Headquarters Road, North Charleston.

This is a nonpartisan election and no party affiliation shall be placed on the ballot.

The polling place for this district is Sunrise Presbyterian Church.

The polls shall open at 7:00 a.m. on election day, and close at 7:00 p.m.

On Thursday, May 6, 2021 at 12:00 noon at the Town Hall of Sullivan’s Island, the Municipal Election Commission will hold a hearing to determine the validity of ballots challenged in this election.

Any run-off, if needed, will be held two weeks after the election on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.

General Elections

All general elections for the office of Mayor and the offices of Town Council Members shall be held on the first (1st) Tuesday in May of each odd numbered year. The terms of office of persons elected in a regular election shall begin at the last regular meeting in June, and terms of those elected in special elections shall begin at the first regular meeting of Council following their election and qualification. 

Conduct of Elections

All municipal elections shall be conducted by the Municipal Elections Commission, in accordance with the election laws of the State of South Carolina. The Municipal Elections Commission shall give public notice of municipal elections at least sixty (60) days prior to the date of the election.

Method of Elections

All regular and special elections for the office of the Mayor and the offices of Town Council Members for the Town of Sullivan’s Island shall be conducted under the non-partisan election and run-off election method. Members of the Town Council shall be elected from the Town of Sullivan’s Island at large.

Requirements for Candidates

Each candidate for the office of Mayor and the offices of Town Council Members is required to be a resident of the Town of Sullivan’s Island and must be a registered voter of Charleston County.

Municipal Election Commission

  • Responsibilities

    • The Municipal Election Commission is responsible for conducting and supervising all elections of the Town of Sullivan’s Island.
       
  • Members

    • The Municipal Election Commission is comprised of three individuals appointed by Town Council who are residents and registered voters of the Town of Sullivan’s Island. 
       
  • Term of Office

    • The term of office for commissioners shall be for 6 years each and shall be so arranged that the term of 1 shall expire each 2 years.
